The Eons Of Eternity

as we dream

the ship still gleams with a
lustre gained from warping
for eons through eternity
myriad indentations pock
the surface from numerous
impacts with space debris
and we, the last of our race,
nestled and nourished deep
within cling to our existence
as forever in stasis we hurtle
at light speed through the void
and dream of home long gone

sentinel sensors compute a
collision with the errant hulk
of  an advancing asteroid and
we, as one asleep, are unaware
as ailing technology fails
to react expeditiously
the hull is breached and
navigational functionality
is compromised beyond
even the abilities of the
aging repair droids and the
ship begins to spin erratically
and we dream of cartwheels

the universe beckons
our vessel, helpless
in its clutches, spins
inexorably onwards
tumbling headlong to
unknown destinations
past fantastic nebulae
and cosmic coronas
and galaxy clusters in
our dreaming eyes

we burn and fall

an attractive star system
interrupts the aerobatics
with a gravitational tug
that the powerless ship
is unable to resist
and we are dying
as systems malfunction
and our environment
is engulfed and consumed
by catastrophic conflagration
of stratospheric incineration
and we are burning in high level
entry to an alien atmosphere

the ship cannot withstand
such relentless friction
disintegration commences
spewing red hot cargo and
molten metal globules as
arcing sparkling trails of a
deathly downward dive
and we, cocooned, in our
stasis pods are ejected
and cast asunder from
the sanctuary which carried
us for eons through eternity
that can no longer sustain
our life support vitality
our pods plummet in freefall
until arrested by billowing chutes
we are the rain and snow
and the graceful blizzard of
blossom on a spring breeze
obscuring the sky as we drift
to land we know not where
dreaming of beginnings
on our strange new world.

the ships shallow trajectory
orbits the planet twice more
before its declining descent
brings final impact with a
vast ocean of dark liquidity
the heat ravaged remains of
our once gleaming ship sink
beneath the surface turning
the area into a mighty plume
of white hot gaseous steam
melting liquefying and then
vaporizing the vestiges of
internal infrastructure until
the power core is exposed to
this hostile alien environment
a searing blinding flash ensues
and a pulsating beam of  light
thrusts briefly skyward a last
desperate grasp toward the cold
eons of eternity and we, who
had not been ejected and will
never awake, we blink from
existence never again to dream

and we who fall from fiery
nightmare are carried afar by
the whim of an alien climate
and can only dream of silence
as one we fall divided we land
far and wide we drop to the
surface of this alien terrain
until we drop no more and our
salvation is complete under
an empty sky that bears no
mark or witness to our arrival
and we lay scattered waiting to
wake under the laughing stars
and cold dark eons of eternity

when we wake

our life support diminishes as
the pods no longer receive
programmed commands so
execute revival procedures
to awaken their comatose
occupants who have been
our hosts during the eons
of eternity and yet more
who now awaken but
are faint and weak
and are unable to
breathe they
gag as pod
by death we
flee from our
beloved hosts who
bound to us in our need
with whom we traveled the
eons of eternity dreaming of
their home our haven no more
and again we are lost alone in
need of hosts that we may live
to convey our message and our
warning against the coming of
the unspeakable that follows us
across the dark eons of eternity

we are umb’ra

there exist many
more universes

to yours and other
dimensions too yet
each are different

and unique in their
composition and
content and  yet we
are not of either
for we are umb’ra
we exist outside

of time itself we
are of the ether
which we weave within
the intricacies
of intelligence
and entwine within
the breathing dreams of
sentient beings
wherever they are
whatever their form

we cannot exist
without them we fade
as umb’ra we are
as ephemeral
as the glint of a
distant star shining

at night until day
across the eons
of eternity

and from those eons
an intangible
entity seeks us
its unblinking eye
senses our pure form
drawing ever close

ephemeral we
excite and incite
its need for umb’ra
conjoined with beings
we are protected

Good use of imagery – Isaac Asimov-esque in its detailing.
